This procedure will guide a user through running a virus scan to ensure malice was not brought upon their computer.
Definitions
- “Standard Virus Infection": The computer is infected with a traditional virus/spyware infection.
- For example: The device is getting pop-up advertisements, the device has "Potentially Unwanted Programs,” browser hijack, exhibiting odd behaviors, etc.
- “Fake Virus Alert": A website pop-up that suggests that the computer is infected and provides a telephone number to call to address the infection. Upon calling the suggested number, the vendor may ask for a service fee to clean the machine but will request remote access to the device.
- “Pop-up Ads/Action Center Alert": A website pop-up in either a pop-up window and/or Action Center that suggests an infection or that “software has expired … click here to renew”.
- "Ransomware": A computer infection that installs without the customer's knowledge, proceeds to encrypt the customer's machine, and typically requests a ransom payment to decrypt files.

Malwarebytes
- Click the arrow in the taskbar notification area
- Right click the icon that looks like a blue M that will be Malwarebytes and click
- Click Start Threat Scan
- The scan will start
- Once Done a box will appear showing you the results
Microsoft Defender
- Select start menu type in the search field Security or Defender
- Select "Open Windows Security"
- Click Virus & threat protection.
- Select "Scan options,"
- Choose "Full scan"
- Select "Scan now"
Microsoft Safety Scanner
Microsoft Safety Scanner is a scan tool designed to find and remove malware from Windows computers. Simply download it and run a scan to find malware and try to reverse changes made by identified threats.
- Select "Download Microsoft Safety Scanner “ 32 or 64 bit version that matches your device
- Go to where the file was downloaded and launch the "MSERT.exe" file.
- "License Agreement" page, select "Accept all terms of ..." and choose "Next."
- "General Information" page, select "Next"
- "Scan Type" page, select "Full scan ...", do NOT select "Next" button. When Windows Defender is done to click "Next".
- The device will be scanned for threats.
- After the scan report of threats will be displayed and action taken by software. Select “Finish.”

What to do if nothing is found in your scan
If you've performed a security scan and no safety issues were found, and you still have concerns or problems with your device, you can reset your password as a preventative measure.
What to do if threats are found
- Remove the device from the network and disconnect any devices connected to it.
- Reset your password immediately.
- Provide screenshots of the results of the scan.
- Include the serial number of the device.
- Call IT Help Desk right away.
Reset your IVCC Password

Allow for Synchronization
After resetting your password, please note that account updates between email and network accounts may take approximately 5 minutes to synchronize. To ensure a smooth login experience on an on-campus device, waiting for this synchronization to complete is essential.
